What Does a Blackberry Phone Do?

The BlackBerry, produced by RIM of Waterloo, Canada, is a leading smartphone choice for the business-minded individual. Like most smartphones, it combines the functionality of a cell phone and an organizer, but a BlackBerry is much more than a digital organizer. A BlackBerry allows mobile access to computer-like functions such as email, web browsing, mobile banking, instant messaging and social networking, among others.

How to Navigate a Blackberry Without the Trackball

Many of the newer BlackBerry Smart Phones are designed to be used with a trackball. The trackball allows the user to navigate screens, applications and the cursor (when composing text). It is possible, however, to navigate some BlackBerry applications and functions using just the keypad.

Guest Post on Twibes Blog: Writers Find Community on Twitter

Writing is a solitary craft, albeit one that is difficult to practice in a vacuum. Freelance writers who originally hail from print and broadcast newsrooms understand this all too well.

Working outside of the realm of cubicle life acquaints freelancers to the double-edged sword of freedom. There is the autonomy to set one’s own hours and to choose one’s own writing subject matter. But while freelance writers get to set their own paths, they also have to navigate those paths on their own.

Web Domain Defined

Most Internet users are familiar with web domains, or domain names, though they may not know it. Domain names are usually the most memorable portions of URLs. For instance "google.com" is the domain name that is the building block of the URL "http://www.google.com."

BlackBerry culture

BlackBerry culture

By Zakiya Lathan, CBS 11 News Web Producer

BlackBerry users are tech-savvy, on top of their tasks, well organized and always connected. If not, those are usually the traits that they aspire to. Why else would they shell out hundreds of dollars for a phone and then a similarly expensive amount every month for a data plan?

For most BlackBerry users, myself included, it is about more than just being organized. It is a way of life--a culture.

There is a community, facilitated both online and through the smartphone itself, of dedicated BlackBerry fanatics.

The use of texting and common short codes in mainstream culture

By Zakiya Lathan, CBS 11 News Web Producer

There are teens in the U.S. who own a cell phone, yet have never used it to make a call.

Many cell phone users, young and old alike, communicate on their devices mainly through texting. It's fast; it's efficient and it allows you to stay connected with friends and family without getting in the way of your other multitasking.

If you want an indication of how much text messaging has permeated mainstream society, just look to pop culture:

It is rumored that Britney Spears broke up with ex-husband, Kevin Federline, via text message.

Text messaging is the new way to communicate. It may also soon become the new way to accomplish a lot of other tasks.

Ana's online

A look at the pro-ana/mia online movement

By Zakiya Lathan, CBS 11 News Web Producer

"They" call it a disorder. I call it a choice.  A lifestyle."

That is what "Katie" (not her real name) told me via e-mail. I met Katie on the popular networking site, MySpace. She is one of many young women who are part of the pro-ana/mia movement, a movement that is mostly conducted online.

Online is where I met a 20-year-old college student, who uses the screen name: FixMeThin. Like Katie, she wishes to remain anonymous. Also like Katie, she identifies herself as anorexic. FixMeThin describes the pro-ana/mia movement  this way:

"Um, well, there are really two sides of what they are calling the pro ana/mia movement. Ana is shorthand for anorexia and mia is shorthand for bulimia. Uh, one side are the people who believe it is, it is a disorder. And we use the Web sites and social networking tools to just give each other support. There are girls on there who are going through recovery and they're talking about what's it like going through recovery. There are girls that are actually in centers that are going through and returning and telling us how it goes. And they don't, they believe that it is a disease. But it's a disease that they're willing to accept, is the problem," said FixMeThin.
