John Mayer ditches his BlackBerry Bold (Yes, he got one early)

John Mayer was one of the few people on this planet who actually had and used a BlackBerry Bold, despite the fact that it hasn't been officially released yet. The only other person that I can think of,  off the top of my head, who already has a BlackBerry Bold is Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO of Research In Motion. So how Mayer got one is beyond me. He obviously knows someone. But being well-connected is not really all that surprising in Hollywood.

What is surprising is that he has been seen recently sans BlackBerry Bold. That's right. It looks like he has ditched his BlackBerry Bold and has gone back to using his BlackBerry Curve (which is the phone that I use).

There are rumors that the release of the BlackBerry Bold is being delayed due to battery issues. Could this be why Mayer is no longer using the phone that he once touted as the be all end all of smartphones? We'll see.

I, for one, was planning to buy the BlackBerry Bold as soon as I could get my hands on one. Now I'm considering whether or not I should wait a bit. I'll definitely get one, but I may wait for the next model up. I don't know. Then again, I just may be camped out in front of the store on the BlackBerry Bold release day like the insane BlackBerry fanatic that I am. Only time will tell.

Documents To Go for BlackBerry released...sort of

Documents To Go has just listed on their Web site BlackBerry Version 1.002. Under choices for devices, all of the latest available BlackBerry models as well as the BlackBerry 9000, or Bold, are listed. Could DataViz be posting information about their software in anticipation of the release of the BlackBerry Bold? Will the release from RIM come earlier than expected?

I tried to download the trial software version for my BlackBerry 8300 (I'm waiting for the Bold before I upgrade). There is no way to download a trial release of their basic software. It looks like you can only download a "pro" version. But to do that you need the key from the basic software...which isn't released yet, but comes pre-loaded on the Bold— which hasn't been released yet. So basically it is a cruel, cruel tease.

But everything on the site is written as though the Bold were already released...

I'm guessing that the Bold will be available for sale to consumers within a week. That is just my guess. We'll see...

New iPhone: porn friendly?

I doubt that this is what Apple had in mind when it decided to release a 3G iPhone. But let's face it, smartphones are becoming miniature computers. And while many use computers for productive purposes—there are a lot of people out there who are closet pervs. Popular Web sites, in general, are beginning to provide mobile content. It is really not surprising that adult-themed sites are doing likewise.

Leading porn purveyors see the iPhone as a dream come true. Its relatively ample screen size, speedy Web access and ease of use are just part of it. The device's miniaturized version of Apple's Safari software simplifies mobile access and streamlines the process of tailoring dirty sites for optimal viewing on the go. "It's by far the porn-friendliest phone," says Devan Cypher, representative for San Francisco–based Sin City Entertainment. As evidence of the gadget's rocketing popularity in California's porn capital, the San Fernando Valley, numerous iPhone-specific porn sites have been launched in recent months. "There are a few hundred iPhone porn sites now in use," says Farley Cahen, vice president of business development for AVN Media Network, the adult industry's trade body. Many others are currently in the works targeting the iPhone 2.0, which goes on sale July 11.

Why BlackBerrys are (still) better than iPhones

Read this Forbes article. It talks about the new iPhone's disappointments, but in doing so, the writer repeatedly compares it to BlackBerry and points out how RIM does it better.

For instance, iPhones can't cut and paste. This is something that BlackBerry has down to a science. There are even shortcuts for cutting and pasting with BlackBerry. I use the cut and paste shortcuts all of the time when composing e-mails.

The iPhone can't send or receive MMS. What's up with that? Even the cheap phones that you get for free with the most basic of cell phone services does that. If the dumbphones (as opposed to smartphones) can do that, I don't see why Apple hasn't figured it out.

No Replaceable Batteries
Hardcore road warriors don't have time to stop and recharge their phones. Instead they carry their batteries with them, clicking them into their BlackBerrys in the backs of cabs, or, if they're lucky, in a coffee shop. By contrast, there's no easy way to crack open the new iPhone's sleek case to pop in a battery, disappointing bloggers.
And while kits are available for do-it-yourselfers, we wouldn't recommend trying it in between bites of your bagel.

BlackBerrys can help you to make (or lose) money

NEW YORK - As if BlackBerry users needed one more excuse to be glued to their screens, E-Trade Financial Corp. is giving its account holders an application that will let them get real-time stock quotes and trade on their phones.

High-end phone users have for a while been able to access E-Trade's Web site
and those of most banks and brokerages, but the online firm is the first major
U.S. brokerage to provide a mobile application with cash transfers and real-time quotes.
